Second edition / PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 2024
In early July 2019 Emma Anna travelled to New Orleans for Kolaj Fest, an annual international collage conference produced by Kolaj Magazine. She forgot to check the weather. While Hurricane Barry threatened to descend upon the city, Emma found herself riding out the storm in a windowless hotel room with a set of scissors, a stick of glue, a collection of tourist guides and the 'B' volume of an old Encyclopedia Britannica.
What began as a project to chew time became an experiment in 'Collage in the Age of the Pre-Apocalypse'. Made under the influence of Wholefoods sushi, cheap hotel bar cocktails, and feed by sleep deprivation and the fear of TV news broadcasts, One time in New Orleans is a strange and surreal souvenir of a time past, that also rings warning bells for the future. The material and ideas from Emma's collage experiments were later processed digitally and reconfigured for publication. The essence of the experience is captured in an introduction by the artist that details some of the inspiration that feeds her ongoing creative practice.
